Fill out your DS156 form online at above website, after you submit the website will automaticly generate you a pdf file which contains the barcode. I guess they can scan the barcode to load your info into computer when they get your form at embasssy.
You do not need the barcode or number when you make appointment, but you better use online filling before you interview. Print the form after you fill them
